Rendering Day: Monday 2/23!

Rendering Day Reminder:

Rendering Day is Monday, February 23rd from 12:00 to 2:00.  The program lists it as Friday, February 20th.  We changed the date right after the kick-off meeting due to a conflict with some testing this week.  Just want to be sure that everyone is planning on being there on Monday, not Friday.

If travelling by bus, they will need to park at Lot 13, South of Doyt Perry Stadium.

If there is inclement weather on Monday, and schools close, Rendering Day will still go on.  We realize that this will significantly affect attendance, but there really isn’t time to reschedule.  The only way that we will cancel is if BGSU closes and/or there is a Level 3 in Lucas or Wood Counties.

Upcoming events for 2014 competition

We have some important dates coming up that we need to make you aware of:

• Saturday, February 1st @ 9:00 am – guided Site Visit to Sanger Branch (RSVP by Thursday 1/30)
• Friday, February 21st (Time to be determined) – Rendering Day @ AIAT Office with Lawrence Technical University
• Saturday, February 22nd (Tentative) – Rendering Day @ AIAT Office with Bowling Green State University

We need RSVP’s for these dates as we are having representatives from the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and the Universities generously sharing their time with us and the students.  We highly recommend attending the Site Visit as the students will have the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the site and existing building, in addition to hearing the Library’s representatives thoughts on the project.  A representative from the Library will be one of the judges, so this is a chance to gain some insight on what they might be looking for.

The rendering days are also extremely beneficial to the students as they give the students the opportunity to learn some tricks of trade from professionals, professors, and other students.  For many students, this project may be the first opportunity to present their work.  Learning from others who have done this before and will be judging the competition is a fantastic way to dramatically improve their skills.

It was suggested that a time during the school day would give the students an opportunity to take a field trip, and thus be more available than an evening when many students are busy with after-school activities.  A Saturday will also be scheduled to allow those students who may not be able to take a field trip an opportunity to attend as well.

If you have not been contacted by an advisor or liaison, please let us know so that we can get one assigned to you.

2014 Competition Kickoff

The kickoff meeting for the 2014 AIA Toledo High School Design Competition is coming up very soon!

Who should attend:  Instructors, Professional Advisors/Liaisons, Students who would like to participate

What to expect:  We will be distributing the 2014 HSDC program, as well as answering any questions you may have regarding the competition.

This year’s project was the design of a two-unit residential duplex for the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority (LMHA).  Students were challenged to create a functional living unit that met the needs of affordable housing while addressing many factors such as balancing public/private spaces; responding to site factors and orientation; incorporating sustainable concepts; providing universal access; and, most importantly, designing a building that someone could call “home.”

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Michael Cadwell of The Ohio State University will be speaking at the awards ceremony.  He is a Walter H. Kidd Professor and the Director of OSU’s Knowlton School of Architecture.

Representatives from LMHA & AIA Toledo will also be in attendance and will be presenting awards for the winning entries.

We strongly encourage professional members of our Chapter to attend this highly-supported community outreach program, regardless of previous level of participation.  It is a great opportunity to observe and even influence the future of our profession.

This year’s High School Design Competition project was a structure that combined all the necessary interests for Cullen Park into one unified building for the community. This site has proven to be an asset not only to the local residents in providing walking and shoreline activities, but also for those out of town enthusiasts that need access to the lake front. Space was also needed at the entrance of the building to allow patrons to pay for boat launching as well as pick up last minute items such as bait and licenses. The exterior of the building was also designed to accommodate the needs of maintenance and site improvement storage during the winter months when the site may not be utilized as much. Finally, the building was to react and enhance the adjacent waterfront, compliment the existing site amenities, and be functional for both pedestrian and motor vehicle access.

Visions of Cullen Park is a community Point Place group that is working on creating a revitalization effort to create the only deepwater access for 20 miles of shoreline around the Toledo area. The goal of the group is to create a destination in which efforts have already begun by dredging the waters around the ramps and docks to allow boaters to be five minutes from their trailers to some of the best walleye fishing in Lake Erie. Other groups of interest to the park include family-style canoe, kayak, and rowing-shell organizations to help promote hand-powered water sports. Finally the park also includes a vast variety of migratory bird watching out into the bay.

Dean Glen S. LeRoy, FAIA, FAICP will be discussing the programs that the College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technological University offers and the future of the Architecture profession.

This annual AIA Toledo tradition has gained the recognition of the National AIA with the receipt of AIA National Component excellence award in 2005 and the continued receipt of AIA National Component Matching Grants (which increase total student scholarship awards). The top two Senior Scholarship Awards ($2,600 and $1,400) are made possible through The American Institute of Architects Toledo Chapter Scholarships with the University of Toledo Foundation. We thank the membership for its support of this program over the years.

Site Visit - Cullen Park

There will be a guided site visit of this year’s project site (Cullen Park) this Saturday, February 4 at 9:00 a.m.  Vee Stader from Visions of Cullen Park will be there to show us around.

Cullen Park is on Summit Street in Toledo, a couple of miles north of downtown.  See map at this link:  http://g.co/maps/ahwev.

We highly encourage students to visit the site to get a “feel” of what it’s all about, as well as possibly find some inspiration for their building design.  The park is a public facility; if you can’t make this site visit, feel free to visit when you can!

AIA Toledo 61^st Annual High School Design Competition

This year’s High School Design Competition project was a classroom and workshop building for a community garden managed by Toledo GROWs. This garden has proven to be a great asset to the local residents in both providing for food and improving community pride. A space is needed at the garden site where maintenance and improvement projects can occur (workshop), and where learning associated with the garden (including cooking classes) can occur. Storage of supplies for the gardens is needed. The building will react to and enhance the adjacent urban infrastructure, complement the existing site amenities, and be functional for both pedestrian and motor vehicle access.

A chicken coop will be shown somewhere on the site. Toledo GROWs is always looking for unique and improved chicken coop designs, and is interested in innovations students may propose.

This project incorporates a building of no more than 4,000 square feet, along with exterior site features.

Ms. Khodadad will talk about the path through school to a career in architecture.

Congresswoman Kaptur and Mr. Szuberla will discuss the importance of community gardens in general, Toledo GROWs in particular, and will let us know about local initiatives in our community.

The boards have been turned in, and we’ve checked them all in for judging in a couple of weeks. Now we encourage you to attend the awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 26 (which should miss most schools’ spring breaks) at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Summit Street in Toledo.

To get an accurate count for the food please RSVP to hsdc.aiatoledo@gmail.com by Thursday, April 14. Attendance is free for students, parents and teachers (and a limited number of guests). We encourage students to attend even if they didn’t turn in a project, so they can listen to our speakers and see the range of projects submitted.

A Reminder:

The 2011 AIA Toledo High School Design Competition kick-off meeting will be held on January 10, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. in the AIA Toledo Office located at 521 W. Woodruff Avenue, Toledo, OH 43604. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at hsdc.aiatoledo@gmail.com.

Last year's winning boards will be returned to the instructors at the kickoff, and we will have additional boards that were left behind at last year's awards ceremony for instructors to pick up.

Also, as a resource for instructors and students, we have several boxes of recent architecture magazines that instructors can take and students can use for inspiration. Feel free to take a few handfuls or a whole box (depending on how many people are interested).
