The competition kickoff meeting was Tuesday, January 8 at 4:00 pm at the AIA Toledo office. Despite the short notice (although it was listed on the brochure that went out to all schools in December), a few instructors showed up and received the program sheets and were able to ask program questions of the HSDC Committee.
If you or your teacher were unable to attend the kickoff meeting, don't panic! Instructors can still have their class or group participate in the competition by sending us an email telling us you are participating. We will add new classes up to the end of the month (January 22 is shown on the program sheet), and would like a tentative list of participating students by February 22 (sooner, if possible). Project boards are due March 27, 2013 (and that date cannot change).
This year's program is a residential duplex development in a site adjacent to Lucas County Metropolitan Housing Authority's Collingwood Green project. We have had many requests for a residential project over the past few years, and this year we are able to respond to those requests.
In addition to being a relatively affordable project, LMHA has set sights on sustainability as a goal, and would also like to provide accessible design where possible. This program includes a requirement for Juniors & Seniors to have one accessible unit in their development. Sustainable features are also called out for on the program.

AIA HS Design Competition Kickoff TODAY!
We

The AIA Toledo High School
Design Competition kickoff meeting will be today (Tuesday, January 8) at 4:00 pm at the
AIA Toledo 521 W. Woodruff Ave. ,
Toledo
Instructors,
advisors, and interested students are welcome to attend and see what this year’s
program will be, as well as have the first opportunity to ask questions
regarding the project.
Also, if
you are an instructor who had winning students last year, the winning boards
will be available.
If you
cannot attend the kickoff, that’s OK; we’ll post the program sheet to the
website by the end of the week, and mail it to the instructors who have told us
that their school will be participating.
Please let us know if your school is participating by the end of the
month so we trim the email list down to only the people who need to be on it
and aren’t cluttering up everyone’s inbox.

Ready for the 2013 competition?
The 2013 (63rd annual!) AIA Toledo High School Design Competition will be kicking off Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the AIA Toledo Office (521 Woodruff Ave., Toledo). Please join us as we introduce the 2013 competition and discuss our program for the spring!
After several long years and a few requests, the project this year will be of a residential nature... stay tuned for more details!

Awards Presentation
This year’s High School Design Competition project was a structure that combined all the necessary interests for Cullen Park into one unified building for the community. This site has proven to be an asset not only to the local residents in providing walking and shoreline activities, but also for those out of town enthusiasts that need access to the lake front. Space was also needed at the entrance of the building to allow patrons to pay for boat launching as well as pick up last minute items such as bait and licenses. The exterior of the building was also designed to accommodate the needs of maintenance and site improvement storage during the winter months when the site may not be utilized as much. Finally, the building was to react and enhance the adjacent waterfront, compliment the existing site amenities, and be functional for both pedestrian and motor vehicle access.
Visions of Cullen Park is a community Point Place group that is working on creating a revitalization effort to create the only deepwater access for 20 miles of shoreline around the Toledo area. The goal of the group is to create a destination in which efforts have already begun by dredging the waters around the ramps and docks to allow boaters to be five minutes from their trailers to some of the best walleye fishing in Lake Erie. Other groups of interest to the park include family-style canoe, kayak, and rowing-shell organizations to help promote hand-powered water sports. Finally the park also includes a vast variety of migratory bird watching out into the bay.

The top two Senior Scholarship Awards ($2,600 and $1,400) are made possible through The American Institute of Architects Toledo Chapter Scholarships with the University of Toledo Foundation. We thank the membership for its support of this program over the years.

Student Information Form
The Student Information and Parent Release Form for Media Recording form has been updated for the 2012 competition and posted at the link below.

- Students & Instructors: Make sure each student includes one copy of this on the back of each board (two copies total) in sealed envelopes taped to the boards. Student names MUST BE LEGIBLE, and written the way the student wants it to appear on the participation certificate.
- Parents: We photograph winners as they are receiving awards, if we get an article in the newspaper we ask for your permission to use the students' images.
- Seniors: Please let us know of any further education you intend to pursue. Some of our scholarships have eligibility requirements (although the responses you have for these questions will not affect judging).

More Questions & Answers
There's only a couple weeks left until projects are due, so hopefully the students' plans are starting to shape up and they're starting to think about how this is going to be presented.
Sorry for the late response, but there are a few questions which we realized had not yet been responded to. These affect program elements, although they will hopefully clarify the project:
1) Can the 1000 sf patio be split up to be used with the bird watching station is station is detached from larger structure?
The patio cannot be split; it must remain one space.
2) Can a student fill in the shoreline and create a break wall/seawall type of structure?. (on the side where current loading docks are, and they would of course stay within the development zone)
Yes, this is allowed.
3) Is the 1/4 acre for Habitat Restoration need to be within the development zone as well? The habitat restoration area can be outside the development zone.
Habitat Restoration zone is no longer required, it is now optional, but recommended. "Habitat Restoration" is simply an area of the site that is reserved for native plants and/or animals to reside; further specifics of the type of habitat being restored are not necessary.
4) There is some confusion regarding the sustainability and site features requirements.
Change the last paragraph under “The Project” to read:

Site Visit - Cullen Park
There will be a guided site visit of this year’s project site (Cullen Park) this Saturday, February 4 at 9:00 a.m. Vee Stader from Visions of Cullen Park will be there to show us around.
Cullen Park is on Summit Street in Toledo, a couple of miles north of downtown. See map at this link: http://g.co/maps/ahwev.
We highly encourage students to visit the site to get a “feel” of what it’s all about, as well as possibly find some inspiration for their building design. The park is a public facility; if you can’t make this site visit, feel free to visit when you can!
